The Nano-museum is an experimental concept for a mobile, modular, participatory, and transdisciplinary museum, developed by La Rochelle University under the SAPS (Science With and For Society) label.

Its very first prototype features five works by contemporary artists inspired by five research projects conducted by the University's laboratories.

‍

Visiting hours: 10:00 AM - 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM - 6:00 PM

‍

THE ALGAE HERBARIUM - Gwen Le Gac

RESEARCH TOPIC: Study of molecules present in coastal algae and Charente seaweed farming.

HOST LABORATORY: Littoral ENvironment and Societies (LIENSs) - UMR 7266 (La Rochelle University, CNRS)

Inspired by a 19th-century algae herbarium as well as her artist residency, the series of drawings and the reading of the captions by the artist celebrate the diversity of algae species. The Algae Herbarium does justice to their beauty, inviting us to question our prejudices about these plants with their many benefits.‍

‍

RELENTLESS CONCRETE - Yuri Zupancic & Pauline Rolland

RESEARCH TOPIC: Study of the corrosion phenomenon that degrades reinforced concrete infrastructure in coastal areas.

HOST LABORATORY: Laboratory of Engineering Sciences for the Environment (LaSIE) - UMR 7356 (La Rochelle University, CNRS)

Relentless Concrete is a diptych consisting of a sculpture and a video work, inspired by the use of reinforced concrete for our infrastructure and the phenomenon of corrosion. The work challenges us to consider the power struggle between human construction and nature.‍

‍

ALBATROSS - Mouawad + Laurier

RESEARCH TOPIC: Monitoring of great albatross populations in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.

HOST LABORATORY: Centre for Biological Studies of Chizé (CEBC) - UMR 7372 (La Rochelle University, CNRS)

The Albatross, between AIR and WATER, an immense and majestic bird, a sentinel of the high seas capable of traveling thousands of kilometers without ever touching land, inspired the artists to create this life-sized paper representation. An invitation to better understand and protect this extraordinary species.‍

‍

ARCHAEOLOGY OF SILENCE | BURIED LANDSCAPES - Emmanuel Faivre

RESEARCH TOPIC: Storytelling as a tool to engage citizens in the La Rochelle Zero Carbon Territory project.

The artist has created a two-part soundscape that immerses visitors in a world between the present and the future: embark on a journey to the La Rochelle Urban Community in 2040.

‍

THE OBSERVATORY - Junie Briffaz

RESEARCH TOPIC: Observation of marine megafauna and monitoring of strandings.

HOST LABORATORY: PELAGIS - UAR 3462 (La Rochelle University, CNRS)

The Observatory, inspired by the artist's immersive experience within the PELAGIS laboratory, takes us on a journey to discover the extraordinary diversity of birds, marine mammals, and other megafauna living off the Atlantic coast.
