Ismahane Poussin, a graphic designer and explorer of creative techniques, has united the old and the new in her project Wage Against the Machine. Venturing into the unknown world of jacquard knitting on a vintage machine from the 1970s, she transformed it into a tool for creating rudimentary typefaces. Inspired by photography and a penchant for kitsch, Ismahane merged the aesthetic of knitting with her mastery of typography, resulting in patterned scarves that carry subversive messages about the fast-fashion industry.
Ismahane is a multidisciplinary French artist and designer based in Paris. She holds a BTS in graphic design from the Duperré School and a DSAA in typographic design from the Estienne School.
Often working across multiple traditional and digital mediums simultaneously, her artistic approach is exploratory and fueled by an endless curiosity. She believes in the intersection of different fields and the experimentation of new processes. Her primary graphic inquiries focus on the boundaries between mediums and how to create by setting constraints and ground rules. In line with these questions, she devotes a large part of her practice to knitting on a hacked knitting machine, through which she explores the frontier between typeface design and patterns.
A child of the internet, she was drawn—and even fascinated—from an early age by the naive and vibrant aesthetics of early computers. These images from the dawn of the digital era have never left her and remain her primary source of inspiration. She is also interested in visual countercultures such as fanzines, art brut, and the graphic worlds of post-punk and electronic music.
These lo-fi aesthetics have also contributed to her passion for knitwear—a medium that shares characteristics and a history with the foundations of computing.
From all these inspirations emerges a graphic identity rich in a multiplicity of formats, supports, mediums, and techniques, leading to highly refined visual elements. Through her work, she enjoys prompting reflection and personal interpretation from the viewer, creating a dialogue between herself and them similar to those she enjoys fostering in her daily life.
